AMBERIF 2020

27th International Fair of Amber and Jewellery

Gdańsk, 31 August 2020
26-29 August 2020 | Poland, Gdańsk, AMBEREXPO

The 27th edition of AMBERIF will go down in history as smaller, more modest in side events, yet one of the world’s few jewellery trade shows to take place in 2020. Amberif is the largest jewellery trade event in Poland and the largest amber industry show in the world. Nearly 240 exhibitors from 13 countries presented their products under strict sanitary requirements, not in March, as before, but in late August 2020.

Every year, AMBERIF features industry competitions and award presentations. In this year’s edition of the Amberif Design Award, which had a record number of 169 entries from 25 countries, the winner of the Main Prize, sponsored by the Mayor of Gdańsk, was the Warsaw-based designer Marcin Tymiński. Collecting a check for PLN 10,000 from the Mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, he mentioned that this was not the first prize he had won and that he would certainly take part in the future editions of the Award. The absent winners of the Amber Prize Helena Lehtinen, Finland, and the Silver Prize Meng-Ju Wu, Taiwan, sent in video recordings that were shown to the audience gathered in the majestic Artus’ Court, Gdańsk. The exhibitor-dedicated Amberif Selection Most Design-Innovative Product Award had a new format this time: it not only honoured the best entries but also involves a strong and consistent promotion of the winners through advertising campaigns for both Amberif and the industry in Poland and worldwide throughout the next year. Poland’s Minister of Development Grand Prix went to NAC AMBER Marcin Wesołowski for the Nature is Treasure necklace. “Gdańsk is the best place in the world,” said Marcin Wesołowski, the piece’s creator, accepting the award. The MTG SA Gdańsk International Fair Co. CEO Award went to CHILLA Ireneusz Glaza for the Dark Shadow pendant. Honourable mentions were awarded to Sława Tchórzewska, ART7, S&A Jewellery Design and A2 Jewellery. The judges noted with satisfaction that the quality of the entries was very high: many pieces were both excellently crafted and featured novel design. Five out of six winners are associated with the Tri-City Area of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, which shows the strength and innovation of the industry mainly located in the Region of Pomerania.

For 20 years, AMBERIF has been the place to award the honorary title of Amber Personality of the Year. This year, it was awarded to Michał Kosior, a promoter active in the international amber industry, participant in conferences and meetings, appraiser and industry expert. The winners in the Amber Handicraft competition, held by the Pomeranian Skilled Craft Chamber of SMEs, were: in the Senior Category—Jacek Ostrowski, Krzysztof Bondaruk and Grzegorz Tryjefaczka; in the Junior Category—Nadia Klabisz, Jakub Klama and Oliwia Latosińska. The Mayor of Gdańsk Culture Prize went to Paulina Binek, who has engaged in amber-related artistic activities since the 1980s, and who successfully promotes the city of Gdańsk and amber handicraft.

Amber is part of AMBERIF also beyond the fairgrounds as such. The Amberif After Hours side events included two important exhibitions: a presentation of Jarosław Westermark’s original jewellery entitled

Materialisations, brought to you by the Gallery of Art in Legnica at the International Amber Association’s Gallery in Gdańsk, and a retrospective exhibition on Baltic Amber. Trends 2011-2020, which documents the most inspiring amber objects created under a research and implementation project carried out for 10 years now by the Gdańsk City Hall, the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts and the Polish Chamber of Amber Commerce. The exhibition is presented at the Uphagen House, Branch of the Gdańsk Museum. AMBERIF featured the launch of the latest Trend Book 2020 and its side exhibition of 70 prototypes made by design students and leading Polish jewellery artists who were invited to participate in the project. The 28th SILVER International Jewellery Competition’s award-winning entries were shown at the stand of the Legnica Gallery of Art.

Authenticity and trust in the product are the key values nowadays, which is why the SRJ Association of Jewellery Experts in cooperation with HRD Antwerp held a gemmology seminar on “A new approach to the fast identification of (un)mounted gems. New perspectives in jewellery certification and education at HRD Antwerp.” The hot topic of lab-grown diamond identification was discussed, alongside jewellery certification and education at HRD Antwerp. Amber appraisals and gemstone tests were performed at the stands of the Amber Laboratory and the SRJ Association of Jewellery Experts.

The image-building activities aimed at improving the visual qualities of selected parts of the exhibition space were a novelty and a major change. The TOP AMBER Zone is a designated part of Hall A featuring companies with the best designs offering amber jewellery at augmented-standard stands. The Design Gallery has also undergone a major metamorphosis. Smaller, uniform booths arranged in rows allowed designers to present their products more easily and in a more contemporary setting.

We hope that the maintained continuity of Amberif will allow it to grow consistently also in the years to come and will initiate a process of economic recovery in the industry. Join us at AMBEREXPO Gdańsk for next year’s AMBERIF, the 28th International Fair of Amber and Jewellery, 17-20 March 2021! It’s good TO BE here!
