Gdańsk, 17 August 2020

This year’s pandemic has affected many trade exhibition events around the world, including Amberif. As agreed with the majority of the exhibitors, the MTG SA Management Board decided to change the dates of the fair from March to August. The event will be held under elevated sanitary standards and maintain a thorough health and safety regime for its participants.

Gdańsk is the World Capital of Amber. At its heart is the Amber Museum, with the oldest and most valuable items of handicraft on display, and the Museum of Amber Inclusions, with an exhibition of life captured in amber millions of years ago. Famous Mariacka (St Mary’s) Street has many stores, galleries and studios of contemporary amber artists and, all over the city, there are multiple references to its amber heritage. The Amberif trade show, international designer workshops, exhibitions in galleries and museums, multiple business support institutions dedicated to the amber and jewellery industry, alongside universities with amber in their sphere of research interest, all make Gdańsk the go-to place for amber jewellery and for an update on Baltic amber-related knowledge.

Twice a year, at Poland’s largest jewellery trade fair and the world’s largest amber show, amber jewellery is available in an immense selection in terms of design, diversity and quality alike. In 2020, we want to emphasise our position of a global leader in a special way by introducing a new layout in the hall dedicated to manufacturers of amber jewellery: from unique items, limited collections, to outdoor jewellery inspired by current trends in jewellery fashion.

Design, Silver, Gold. A large part of Amberif’s 240 exhibitors are manufacturers of original silver and gold jewellery, gemstone jewellery and fashion accessories. There are also leading importers and representatives of manufacturers from Poland, Lithuania, Italy, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, France, Bulgaria, India, Latvia, Switzerland, Ukraine and USA. The Design Gallery, with its unique design zone and art jewellery from nearly 40 Polish and European jewellery artists, is Amberif’s pièce de résistance. The show is also the largest overview of equipment, tools, findings, raw materials and materials for jewellery production. Polish manufacturers and representatives of the world’s leading companies present their offer in a dedicated technological section.

Understanding amber. This specialised trade show is also an annual opportunity for influential meetings of experts from many areas of business, science and art, a venue for cultural events. Amberif always features an extensive programme of exhibitions, seminars and meetings.

We can now share the results of the 24th edition of Amberif Design Award, the International Amber Jewellery Design Competition, which this year had 130 artists from 25 countries. This marks another impressive rise in the interest in ADA. Amberif Design Award received 169 entries, nearly 15% more than the year before. ADA’s honourees come from Poland, Finland, Taiwan and Iran. This year’s theme of Ultimate Beauty prompts a reflection on the importance of aesthetics, with the aim of the competition to promote amber as an inspirational material for artistic interventions. The Grand Prize, sponsored by the Mayor of Gdańsk, PLN 10,000, went to Marcin Tymiński, Poland, the Amber Prize to Helena Lehtinen, Finland, the Silver Prize to Meng-Ju Wu, Taiwan. The Jury awarded two honorary mentions: to Adriana Lisowska, Poland, and to Fatemeh Darzidarounkola, Iran.

At Amberif, awards will be presented in the exhibitor-dedicated AMBERIF SELECTION Most Design Innovative Product Competition. The Award has been part of Amberif since 1995 but this time will have a new format: it will not only honour the best entries but also involve a strong and consistent promotion of the winners through advertising campaigns for both Amberif and the industry in Poland and worldwide.

The Amberif After Hours side events will include two important exhibitions that need mentioning: the original presentation of Jarosław Westermark’s jewellery entitled Materialisations, brought to you by the Gallery of Art in Legnica, with its preview at the International Amber Association’s Gallery in Gdańsk, ul. Warzywnicza 1 (27 August 2020, 20:00), and a retrospective presentation of the youngest generation of Tri-City designers at Uphagen House, branch of the Gdańsk Museum at ul. Długa 12, Gdańsk, entitled: Baltic Amber. Trends 2011-2020; it documents the most inspiring amber objects created under a research and implementation project carried out for 10 years by the Gdańsk City Hall, the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts and the Polish Chamber of Amber Commerce (midway viewing event: 28 August 2020, 19:30).

Safety at Amberif. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year is a difficult time of many revaluations and unexpected challenges, not only for creative industries. The organisers of trade shows also face such revaluations and challenges. Originally scheduled for March, Amberif 2020 has been postponed to the last weekend of August, as agreed with the exhibitors’ representatives. There are all indications that this will be one of the few jewellery shows in the world to take place in a traditional formula, allowing exhibitors and product buyers to meet directly. The event will be held under elevated sanitary standards and maintain a thorough health & safety regime for its participants. Recommendations and guidelines for trade fairs from the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS), the Polish Chamber of Exhibition Industry and the Ministry of Development will apply on Amberif premises. MTG SA has made sure to introduce: increased cleaning service staff, thermal imaging measurement of the participants’ body temperature, mandatory covering of the mouth and nose, and monitoring of the number of people present in the venue. These restrictions and maintaining social distance are aimed at maximising the safety of Amberif participants.

We hope that the maintained continuity of Amberif will allow it to grow consistently also in the coming years and will initiate the process of economic recovery.
