24th International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones

Gdańsk, 22-25 March 2017

Press release (pdf)

On 22 March, the 24th edition of AMBERIF, the International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones, the world’s largest amber trade exhibition, will begin at the AMBEREXPO Exhibition & Convention Centre Gdańsk. During its four days, more than 470 exhibitors from 18 countries will present the latest trends and technologies in jewellery design. The organisers expect more than 7,000 visitors from all over the world. AMBERIF’s fashion event will be the AMBER LOOK Trends & Styles Amber and Fashion Gala, held on Friday. The world of science will be stirred up with the news of the discovery of the first mummified dinosaur fragment in amber.

AMBERIF is one Europe’s leading platforms for the jewellery industry to meet. Products will be showcased by more than 470 exhibitors from 18 countries, both small studios and large jewellery companies: manufacturers of gold and silver jewellery with amber, coloured gemstones and diamonds. “The greatest things happen when cultures meet—and this is exactly what Amberif is about. Designer pieces emanate a sense of Far Eastern inspirations and a deep knowledge of domestic resources, with new technologies taking the industry by storm. Noteworthy is a larger than usual representation of the manufacturers of luxury watches and the exhibitors from the dynamically evolving technical sector: machines, tools and new jewellery technologies,” remarks Project Director Ewa Rachoń.
In a time-honoured tradition, a remarkable picture album by Prof. Sławomir Fijałkowski, Trend Book 2017+, which systematises the current trends in jewellery and design, will premiere at AMBERIF. The Designers’ Gallery, well known to the enthusiasts of bold and novel design, will yet again be run by designing artists.

AMBERIF features a number of artistic, scientific and popular science events: presentations of the latest discoveries, trade seminars, workshops, exhibition previews, exhibitions, publication premieres, as well as a rare opportunity to meet globally renowned experts. One of them, Dr Ulrich Henn—Director of the German Gemmological Association—will present new ways of changing the properties of gemstones and methods of their recognition. A sensational find by Prof. Bo Wang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nankin—the first mummified dinosaur in Burmese amber—will be discussed by Dr Jacek Szwedo, University of Gdańsk, and Hui Jiang, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The perfectly preserved fragment of a match-sized dinosaur’s tail is covered with long, branched feathers (importantly, amber preserves the finest details in 3D).

The Amberif Design Award International Amber Jewellery Design Competition will have its verdict officially announced for the 21st time. Periphery is the subject set by its curator Barbara Schmidt from the Academy of Art and Design Munich. “An overwhelming number of 124 international artists from 25 countries travelled to this undefined area and explored its options and limits. Some of them, when interpreting the notion of periphery, used light as well as the colour and texture of amber in a remarkably original way,” Barbara Schmidt commented on the submitted entries. The artists’ creative ideas were assessed by an international jury of industry-recognised experts. The winners of the Amberif Design Award 2017 are: Marcin Tymiński /Poland/—Main Prize, Annelisa Mercier /France/—Amber Prize and Susanne Elstner /Germany/—Silver Prize. The award-winning entries and honourable mentions will be published in the AMBERIF Exhibitor Directory and displayed at an after-competition exhibition at AMBERIF.

The AMBER LOOK trends & styles Amber & Fashion Gala is as always especially highly anticipated. It is AMBERIF’s crème de la crème. On Friday evening, the spectators at the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre will see eleven original collections produced by Polish fashion designers in collaboration with amber jewellery makers. Michał Starost, the celebrated Polish fashion designer, is the Gala’s artistic director. The Gala will be hosted by Conrado Moreno.

Prestigious awards are presented during Amberif:
